01 — Operational Status

Sudan Gateways — Current Operational Status

The first question in any Sudan shipment is simple: which gateway is actually working? The assessment below is based on publicly reported information and is updated regularly. Always obtain confirmation before loading.

Port Sudan — South Port Container Terminal

Operating

The country's principal seaport, handling roughly 90% of Sudan's foreign trade. Transshipment operations resumed in mid-2026 after a prolonged suspension, the terminal received large-capacity container vessels for the first time, and in June 2026 it handled over 26,000 TEU across 30 ship calls. Berth depth and overall capacity nonetheless remain structural bottlenecks.

Port Sudan New International Airport (PZU)

Operating

Became the country's de facto international air gateway during the conflict and continues to grow as a regional hub. It is our primary routing for air freight, urgent spares and humanitarian cargo.

Khartoum International Airport (KRT)

Restricted

Reopened to scheduled domestic flights in February 2026 and to international traffic in April 2026, with a three-times-weekly Cairo–Khartoum service running from July 2026. Fuel availability and after-dark operating restrictions apply periodically, so we confirm feasibility per shipment.

Land Borders and Inland Corridor

Corridor-based

The paved Port Sudan–Atbara–Khartoum corridor is the backbone of inland distribution. Corridor-based solutions are offered towards Egypt (Wadi Halfa / Argeen), Chad, Eritrea, Ethiopia and South Sudan.

Sudan is an active conflict environment. Routing, insurance, war-risk premium and delivery point are assessed individually for every shipment. Transit times and capacity figures on this page are indicative; binding offers are issued in writing.

03 — Industries

Industries We Serve

Every industry's cargo behaves differently: one is constrained by weight, another by volume, another by temperature, another by regulation. Across the sixteen verticals below we work with operational knowledge specific to Sudan — from packing to declaration, from stowage plan to site delivery.

Construction and Building Materials

Heavy, bulky and damage-sensitive cargo; the stowage plan drives cost as much as the freight rate.

  • Cement, rebar, structural steel and mesh
  • Ceramics, granite, tiles and natural stone
  • Sanitaryware, taps, aluminium profiles and glass
  • Prefabricated buildings, steel structures, scaffolding

Infrastructure and Public Works

Roads, bridges, dams and municipal works bring wide line-item variety and tight deadlines.

  • Asphalt plants, rollers, graders, excavators
  • Batching plants, crushers, formwork systems
  • Pipes, culverts and reinforcement steel
  • Traffic equipment and lighting columns

Power and Electrical

For high unit-weight and out-of-gauge equipment, survey and lashing are standard procedure.

  • Power transformers, breakers, MV/LV switchgear
  • Generators, motors, turbines, boilers
  • Medium and high voltage cable drums
  • Transmission towers and insulators

Renewables and Solar

Panel fragility and lithium battery declaration are two separate disciplines.

  • Photovoltaic panels and mounting structures
  • Inverters, charge controllers, combiner boxes
  • Lithium and gel batteries (UN3480 / UN3481 declaration)
  • Solar pumps and irrigation systems

Mining and Gold

Sudan's goldfields and the Merowe region generate continuous equipment demand.

  • Crushers, mills, screens, conveyors
  • Drilling rigs, compressors, rock drills
  • Shaking tables, cyclones, separators
  • Mine site spares and consumables

Oil, Gas and Refining

For pipe and OCTG cargo, end protection and flat rack planning are critical.

  • OCTG, casing, tubing, line pipe
  • Valves, flanges, fittings, pumps
  • Drilling consumables and mud chemicals (IMDG)
  • Refinery and terminal spare parts

Agriculture and Agri-Machinery

The Gezira, Gedaref and White Nile lanes create seasonal peaks.

  • Tractors, combines, ploughs, seeders
  • Irrigation pipe, pivots, pumps, drip systems
  • Fertiliser and seed (including UN-classified items)
  • Post-harvest storage and silo equipment

Food, Beverage and FMCG

Shelf life, GMO declaration and SSMO conformity run ahead of the shipping schedule.

  • Rice, sugar, flour, pulses, edible oil
  • Canned goods, tomato paste, milk powder, baby food
  • Beverages, tea, coffee, spices
  • Supermarket goods and packaging materials

Healthcare and Pharmaceuticals

Unbroken cold chain and shelf-life requirements are managed in one file.

  • Medicines and vaccines (2–8 °C reefer / cold boxes)
  • Medical devices, X-ray, ultrasound, monitors
  • Hospital furniture and surgical fit-outs
  • Laboratory consumables and reagents (IMDG items)

Humanitarian and NGO

Donor reporting, exemption letters and speed are all required at once.

  • Tents, blankets, hygiene kits, kitchen sets
  • Food aid, nutritional supplements, water tanks
  • Generators, solar lamps, communications equipment
  • Full aircraft charter and emergency airbridge

Automotive and Spare Parts

For used units, chassis and engine declaration plus ACD compliance unlock the file.

  • Tractor units, semi-trailers, tippers, tankers
  • Tyres, batteries, filters, oils (UN-classified items)
  • Spare parts consolidation

Furniture and Household Goods

High-volume, low-density cargo; flat-pack goods cut cost per cubic metre substantially.

  • Flat-pack and assembled furniture, bedroom sets
  • Kitchen units, worktops, built-in appliances
  • White goods, air conditioning, small appliances
  • Hotel, office and housing project fit-outs

Textile and Apparel

Volume and moisture management; hanging and cartoned cargo are planned separately.

  • Fabric rolls, yarn, trims and accessories
  • Ready-made garments, hanging apparel
  • Home textiles, carpets, curtains

Country

The Country We Ship To — Sudan

Moving cargo into Sudan takes knowledge of the country itself: from the Red Sea coast to the capital where the two Niles meet, from the Nubian pyramids to the savannah woodlands, geography shapes the operation directly. The images below are original illustrations.

  • The Pyramids of Meroë — River Nile State

Meroë, capital of the Kingdom of Kush, anchors the more than two hundred pyramids found in Sudan — more than in any other country in the world. The region connects to the inland corridor today via the Atbara–Shendi line.

07 — Regulation

Sudan Customs Rules and the Mandatory ACD

Since 1 January 2026, an Advance Cargo Declaration (ACD) is mandatory for every shipment bound for Sudan. This is the single most important item on this page: without an ACD number, cargo may not be loaded at the port of origin at all.

ACD — How the Advance Declaration Works

  1. The ACD number must be obtained BEFORE cargo is loaded at the port of origin. It cannot be arranged on arrival.
  2. The number format is ACDSD2026XXXXXX and it must appear clearly on the final Bill of Lading.
  3. Responsibility rests with the shipper, exporter, freight forwarder and carrier; non-compliance exposes the importer to customs fines.
  4. It covers import, transshipment and in-transit cargo without exception — including vehicles, machinery, trucks and bulk shipments.

Documents Required for the ACD Application

  • Draft Bill of Lading
  • Commercial invoice
  • Freight invoice
  • Certificate of origin
  • Packing list

Other Critical Customs Considerations

  • SSMO conformity assessment and pre-shipment inspection procedures
  • GMO prohibition on food imports; non-GMO and quality certificates from recognised superintendents
  • TPRA import permits for telecommunications equipment
  • Shelf-life compliance requirements for pharmaceutical products
  • Health quarantine sampling and laboratory procedures
  • Customs duty and VAT liabilities; exemption letters are issued through the Ministry of Finance
08 — FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Port Sudan currently operating?

Yes. Port Sudan is the country's principal seaport and handles roughly 90% of its foreign trade. Transshipment operations resumed in mid-2026, the terminal received large-capacity container vessels for the first time, and in June 2026 it handled over 26,000 TEU across 30 ship calls. Berth depth and capacity constraints nevertheless persist, so we obtain current service confirmation for every shipment.

Is the ACD certificate mandatory for shipping to Sudan?

Yes, it has been mandatory since 1 January 2026, with no exceptions. The ACD number must be obtained before loading at the origin port and must appear on the final Bill of Lading. Without it, cargo may be refused loading, or face significant delays and fines at destination.

How long does a container take from Turkey to Sudan?

Containers from Mersin or Istanbul typically reach Port Sudan in 18–28 days. The transit depends on the transshipment hub — usually Jeddah or Jebel Ali — and on service frequency. A binding transit time is confirmed with the quotation.

What are freight rates and transit times from China to Sudan?

From the main Chinese ports to Port Sudan, transit generally runs 35–37 days. Rate levels shift from period to period, and we provide the current level at the time of enquiry.

What if my cargo does not fill a container?

Use our LCL consolidation service. Even a single pallet is accepted, and pricing is transparent on a CBM or W/M basis. Consolidation runs through Mersin, Istanbul, Jeddah and Jebel Ali.

Is air freight to Khartoum possible?

It is, subject to conditions. Khartoum airport reopened to domestic flights in February 2026 and to international traffic in April 2026, with a three-times-weekly Cairo–Khartoum service from July 2026. Because fuel and after-dark operating restrictions apply periodically, in practice we plan most air cargo via Port Sudan (PZU).

Can you handle out-of-gauge and heavy-lift cargo?

Yes. We offer Open Top and Flat Rack containers, breakbulk, heavy-lift and MPP vessel chartering. For transformers, generators, cranes and complete plants, a loading study, lashing plan and survey report are run as standard.

Do you arrange full aircraft charter?

Yes. For time-critical, humanitarian and project cargo we source IL-76, AN-124 and B747F capacity. Slots, overflight clearances and landing permits are handled on our side.

Do you deliver inland from Port Sudan to Khartoum?

Yes. Inland distribution runs along the paved Port Sudan–Atbara–Khartoum corridor, and we also deliver to Wad Madani, Kosti, El Obeid, Gedaref and Nyala. A proof-of-delivery photo and signed waybill are shared as standard.

Can I export gum arabic or sesame from Sudan?

Yes, we work on the export side as well. Gum arabic originates from El Obeid and North Kordofan, while sesame comes mainly from Gedaref and Sennar. We handle the certificate of origin, non-GMO and quality certificates, survey report, fumigation and moisture control.

Can I ship household goods from the UK to Sudan?

Yes. We move household goods from Felixstowe or Southampton in dedicated or shared containers. Door collection in London, Manchester and Birmingham, packing, an inventory list and in-city delivery beyond Port Sudan are all included.

Can I import telecom or electronic equipment?

Yes, but telecommunications equipment requires a TPRA import permit, and the customs process does not begin without it. We run the permit file, the technical specification list and the customs declaration in parallel.

Do you carry dangerous goods?

Yes. We handle classification, packing, labelling and declaration under IMDG (sea), ADR (road) and IATA DGR (air). MSDS and DGD preparation, limited quantity handling and special permits form part of the service.

Is war-risk insurance available?

Yes. Cargo insurance is arranged on all-risk terms together with war and strikes clauses. As Sudan is an active conflict environment, routing, delivery point and risk premium are assessed individually for each shipment.
